A Place by the Sea
Here, where the waves meet the shore and the sun sets over the sea, a dream came to life. Axel Rosenkrantz de Lassen Lund – known as “the Norwegian hotel king” – had a vision of a seaside hotel to rival the finest international resorts. He laid the foundations in 1934, and on 17 May 1937, Strand Hotel Fevik opened its doors. With its functionalist-inspired architecture designed by Eilert Smith, elegant lines, and exceptional seaside setting, the hotel soon became a symbol of the dream of Southern Norway.

A Place to Come Together
From the very beginning, Strand Hotel Fevik was a place of joy, celebration, and togetherness. Its first hosts, Frida and Harald Hansen, created an atmosphere where locals and visitors alike felt at home. With 40 rooms and 70 beds, the hotel welcomed up to 120 guests. Music filled the summer evenings, with Finn Våland and other musicians setting the rhythm as guests danced beneath the chandeliers. Many returned year after year, including the loyal Scotsman McEvan – affectionately known as “Isvannet” (“Ice Water”).

Magical Summers
Strand Hotel Fevik became a retreat for those seeking both tranquillity and inspiration. Among them were author Roald Dahl and his wife, actress Patricia Neal. In his simple room with a veranda overlooking the sea, Dahl found inspiration for stories that would later become classics. The hotel offered a glimpse of the wider world – a little Southern Norwegian paradise with an international flair.

The Darkness of War
The hotel’s story was interrupted when war came to Norway. In 1940, the hotel was occupied by German officers. Frida and Harald Hansen, however, managed to save it from destruction, and when peace returned in 1945, the hotel was restored and once again filled with life. The post-war years were marked by shortages, with supplies sourced from nearby farms, but optimism gradually returned. English guests arrived and filled the hotel with laughter. In 1949, Arne Bjørklund, recently returned from captivity in Germany, took over as director – marking the beginning of a new era.

An Exotic Chapter
In the 1960s, Mrs Espinoza left her distinctive mark on Strand Hotel Fevik. She came from the Cuban diplomatic community in Oslo, bringing with her a strict regime, strong opinions – and new flavours inspired by the Mediterranean. Both feared and respected, she became an unforgettable part of the hotel’s history.

From Summer Retreat to Year-Round Hotel
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the hotel evolved. New owners modernised the rooms and expanded the conference facilities. The spirit of the seaside hotel lived on, adapted to a new era. During the 1990s, the hotel underwent extensive renovations, once again combining its historic charm with modern comfort.

A New Beginning
In 2003, Agnes Berntsen became the hotel’s director. With passion and determination, she restored the hotel to its position as one of Southern Norway’s proudest landmarks. Extensive renovations brought back its former splendour, and in 2010, a new conference centre, wellness area, and 42 new rooms and suites opened. Designed by architect Roger Hampton, the new additions were created in harmony with the functionalist architecture of the 1930s – a dialogue between past and present.

Classic Norway Hotels
Strand Hotel Fevik has been part of Classic Norway Hotels since 2017. In 2021, the hotel underwent a concept development process focused on rediscovering its original identity as a true seaside hotel. When the hotel opened in 1937, the local newspaper Grimstad Adressetidende wrote that Southern Norway “has gained a seaside hotel of international standards in idyllic surroundings.” This is precisely the spirit we have sought to revive – with great success among both leisure and conference guests, living side by side in beautiful harmony throughout the year.

Today, it is a familiar sight to see guests strolling through the garden in their bathrobes on their way to a refreshing swim. During summer, we invite guests to enjoy yoga on the beach, while conference guests can begin their day with instructor-led mindfulness and breathing exercises. Everything is designed to help you slow down, find a sense of calm, and experience a different kind of hotel stay.

The renewed popularity of winter swimming and saunas in Norway has only strengthened our identity as a true seaside hotel – inspired by the tradition of the classic Danish badehoteller.

Today, Strand Hotel Fevik is one of Southern Norway’s most iconic hotels – a year-round seaside retreat with a soul. History has shaped its walls, while the future remains open.

“A sensory experience at a slower pace.”
